November is the time to check your Pond De-icer

November is the perfect time to check that your pond heater is in good working order. Get that heater out of storage and give it a good once over. Make sure that the heating elements are not corroded and that the cord is not showing nicks or breaks. Getting the pond heater situated now will allow you to simply plug it in when the weather turns icy cold. Even a few days having the pond frozen over can be deadly to your fish. With all of the pond heaters available on the market today it can become a challenge on deciding which one to pick. Your decision should be based on the wattage and the cord length of the heater. A general rule of thumb is to have 250 watts per 100 gallons of water.

What to do in the Water Garden in October

Net Covering

As Halloween draws near and the Trees are beginning to show their magnificent autumn colors we are often asked by many water gardeners, “What do I do now?”   Begin by checking the pond water quality, check ammonia, check Ph and then look around and see what trees are going to drop those leaves right into the water.  Remove any rotted leaves from the water plants. Now cover the pond with a light weight net to stop all of that debris from falling into the water causing winter water mess.  Now, it’s time to relax until all of the leaves are gone from the trees. Keep feeding the fish as long as they seem to be hungry, but begin to cut down on the amount of food that you give them.

May and the Changing Water Temperatures

As the seasons are transitioning from Spring to Summer, the temperature of the water in your pond fluctuates.  These temperature fluctuations can be the cause for ICH, a single-celled protozoan that attacks fish, to flourish. Be prepared in case of an ICH outbreak by having NOX-ICH on hand.   ICH (ichthyophthiriasis) is one of the most prevalent diseases of fish.  It is caused by a microscopic single-celled protozoan that causes white spots in the skin and gills of the fish. Alteration of the protective skin of the fish by ICH allows opportunistic bacteria or fungi invasion and the fish can die from secondary causes. The best control of ICH is prevention. New plants or fish can easily introduce ICH to your pond. An excellent preventative measure is to treat your pond for Ich BEFORE adding new plants, fish or in the Spring when ICH is most prevalent.
Tricker’s recommends Nox-Ich to prevent or treat Ich.  Besides the highly effective and proven malachite green for ich, the product also contains sodium chloride.  Malachite green is a well known and old remedy that has been used to successfully treat not only ich but ectoparasites (gill flukes) as well as bacteria and fungal infections.  Treatment is for 3 consecutive days.  For aquariums, use 1 drop per gallon for 3  consecutive days.  For pond use or larger aquariums use 1 teaspoon per 75 gallons and 1/4 cup treats 900 gallons.  Summary:  4 oz treats 2400 gallons, 1 pint treats 7200 gallons, 1 quart treats 14400 gallons and 1 gallon treats 57600 gallons. For ponds 1/4  cup treats 900 gallons.

Spring Feeding Goldfish and Koi in the Water Garden

Spring and Fall are special times of the year that fish should receive a special diet of wheat germ nutrients that are highly digestible in cooler temperatures. Always supply a variety of foods to assure that your fish are getting all of the nutrients that they need. It is important to stop feeding cold water fish when the temperature of the water goes below 50 degrees F. However, you should use a special blend of fish food that is highly palatable and digestive formula that can be feed to fish in lower temperatures.
